Dust and Your Business: Windows Open or Closed?

We spend the majority of our lives indoors and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says that indoor air quality is one of the top five environmental health concerns, so keeping dust and allergens to a minimum inside is a pretty big deal. Okay, so here’s a question…to reduce dust at your place of business, is it better to leave your windows open or closed?

Believe it or not, it’s not just an open and shut case! Much of the dust indoors comes from outside. Even when windows are closed, drafts can carry dust and pollen inside. Then, of course, there are the multiple causes for pollutants and dust we create indoors, such as building materials, new furnishings or carpet, air fresheners and perfumes, poor ventilation or unvented stoves or microwaves, furnaces, paints, pesticides and more…and of the indoor pollutants, dust mites are one of the most common.

Here are a few tips for dust elimination in your business. Keep your business free of clutter to cut down on dust. Add some green plants to up your oxygen quotient. Make certain your heating and cooling units have good filtration and that you incorporate proper ventilation methods. However, the best way you can keep dust and indoor pollutants at a minimum at your place of business, is to hire a reputable cleaning service for regularly scheduled mopping and vacuuming floors, dusting and more.
